HYDERABAD: Moths and white ants have been held guilty of eating away
the records in the 150 years old Rajahmundry Central Jail. An RTI
applicant could not get the permission to peruse the records of the jail
as he sought to know some details pertaining to the 1972/73 Jai Andhra
movement. The applicant wanted to know the details of persons arrested
and remanded in the Rajahmundry central jail during the movement.
As the Public Information Officer did not give him the required permission to go through the records, the applicant took recourse to making appeals to the appellant authority.
The applicant C Vijay Kumar had filed the RTI application on January 28, 2013 before the PIO. As the PIO had not furnished the information, he made an appeal on March 1, 2013 to the 1st Appellate Authority.
Taking up the issue with the Andhra Pradesh Information Commission further, the applicant, a resident of Rajahmundry said the superintendent of jails, Central Prison, Rajahmundry had informed him that the records of 1972/73 were not available as moths and white ants had eaten away the records as they were 40 years old.
The PIO also informed the commission that the details of remand prisoners were retained only for 12 years. The commission which heard the case recently agreed with the contention of the PIO. The applicant therefore, could not get to peruse the records as they were eaten away by moths and white ants.
