Flood level receding in Godavari

Flood level was receding fast in the Godavari from Wednesday morning. The water level which was at 15.6 feet at 7 a.m. at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram came down to 14.4 feet by 7 p.m.

The discharge into Bay of Bengal was 13.86 lakh cusecs. The administration, however, continued to be on alert and shifted the residents of low-lying areas to safer places during the day.

One person was killed while crossing the causeway at Gannavaram on Tuesday night. The victim was identified as Chinta Krishnamurthy, 52, of Enugupalli village.

In all, 696 people were taking shelter in four relief camps in Amalapuram, Rajahmundry and Rampachodavaram revenue divisions. Boat was the only mode of transportation to reach many villages and hamlets abutting the Godavari.

Home Minister N. Chinna Rajappa, who visited some flood-affected villages during the day, ensured that relief and rehabilitation would be provided to all the victims and necessary steps would be initiated to help the flood victims. He said fforts were on to construct causeways in the Konaseema region and conduct repairs to Ainapuram outfall sluice with Rs. 1.50 crore very soon.
